Rothenburg od der Tauber, A Medieval Old Town in Bavaria, Germany

I always hear this from a friend who always mentions that her brother's favorite town in Germany and in whole of Europe during his holiday lately was Rothenburg od der Tauber. I believed he felt in love with this beautiful medieval old town in Bavaria, Germany. This so-called Altstadt (old City) was not damaged during second world war bombing. In fact when you visit it, you can still see the intact wall that surrounds this lovely city.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is not only famous for its beauty but it is also known as the Christmas city in Germany. You can find there Christmas decors and ornaments all year round. There is also Weihnachtsmuseum or Christmas Museum worth to see in this town.

Among the interesting sights you can see are; Town wall, Plönlein, Spital bastion
St. Wolfgang's Church by the Klingentor gate (fortified church, Altes Brauhaus,Old Smithy, Old Town Hall, Christmas Museum, the Criminal Museum and many more.

The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" means, in German, "Red fortress above the Tauber". This is so because the town is located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River.

A Winter Visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the beautiful town to visit on the Romantic Road in Bavaria, Germany. It is known for its well-preserved medieval Altstadt or Old Town.

This is one of the gates to the Old City. If I am not mistaken, this is the Markusturm (Marcus Tower). These were taken during my second visit last January 2011.

The Market Square (Marktplatz) is the center of urban life in Rothenburg o.d.T. The Square is framed on the west by the Town Hall (Rathaus), on the north by the City Councillors' Tavern (Ratstrinkstube) with its Tourist Information center, on the east by shops and cafes, and on the south by St. George's Fountain.

The Franciscan Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

I took the photo of this Franciscan Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber during our visit last January 2009. It is very obvious because of the date embedded on the picture here. It is known to be the oldest Church of Rothenburg. It was consecrated in the year 1309 and is now celebrating its 700 years of consecration. The church is open to the public for free from 10-12 and 14-16. During the winter months of January and February, it is only open during Saturday and Sunday. Some churches in Germany have entrance fees especially if they need financial help for renovation like the St. Jacob's Church in Rothenburg.

For my highlight tonight, I am sharing a bit about appetite suppressant. I have a bad habit sometimes of eating in the middle of the night. A very concrete example was last night. I went down to eat at around 11PM. HB told me this evening that somebody ate last night because he saw the empty plates laying on the kitchen sink as he took his coffee time this morning before he go to work. I just smiled to HB as he told me about it. This is the reason why I am thinking to take appetite suppressant to stop this bad habit. More updates tomorrow guys. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany, well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. In the Middle Ages, it was an Imperial Free City. A significant fraction of Rothenburg is carefree.

The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" is actually a shortened version of "Rothenburg oberhalb der Tauber", which in German means "Rothenburg above the Tauber". This is so because the town is located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber river. As to the name "Rothenburg", some say it comes from the German words Rot (Red) and Burg (burg, medieval fortified town), referring to the red colour of the roofs of the houses which overlook the river. The name may also refer to the process of retting ("rotten" in German) flax for linen production.

Since German does not have the th-sound (as in thin), the proper pronunciation of the first syllable of the name is more or less like English rote, while -burg is similar to "burk". In IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet): [ro:tənbʊag ɔp dєr taʊba].
